Made of Wood and Stone

by Erika Woelfel

Natural stone has been a popular building material since the dawn of time. Thanks to its beauty, durability and ageless quality, stone is stretching the limits for how it may be used. Designers are now exploring new uses for it, taking stone into the realm of decorative objects and furniture. It is a unique treatment for drawer pulls, light fixtures, and kitchen accessories. Wallpaper manufacturers are using natural stone surfaces as an inspiration for new patterns. Colored stone is an update to the colored marble trend. Besides the ever popular marble tile and granite counter top looks – lava, limestone and agate are pushing the trend for hard natural surfaces even further than before.

What caught my interest was the unique blending of stone and wood into one object. Because both are natural materials, it seems to be a comfortable pairing.
