Holiday Color Trends

by Erika Woelfel

With snow coming down, lights going on and cheer being shared all around, it really feels like that special time of year again! How did it get here so soon, and what new things are happening in color and decorations this year?2013 holiday colors feels particularly fun and optimistic. Instead of the traditional red and green color combo stand-bys, you may see festive palettes in aqua, navy, berry red and charcoal.

Wrapping gifts is more fun when you mix and match zig zags and plaid!

What are some of the fun decorating trends

seen in stores right now?

Laser cut ornaments and holiday cards are everywhere. Every year I get at least one new decoration. This year I got six – in the form of laser cut snowflakes! They reflect all the pretty detail of a real snowflake in wood instead of ice.

Natural ornaments using tree bark, pine cones and twine bring that rustic, outdoorsy element to holiday decorating. That unique garland made with birch bark “beads” mixed with glass beads is a good choice on the mantle.

For people who may not have a whole lot of time, alternative Christmas trees made out of wire look good bare or decorated with festive ribbons and garland. Flat-pack, folding wooden trees are also popular because they are easy to set up and store (taking up less space in the attic or basement) at the end of the season. Micro-pine trees are a big trend because they don’t take up much space, can be given as gifts, and make great centerpieces on a table or counter top. I’ve seen the frosted ones, and they sure are cute!

A very Scandinavian palette of red, white and cool arctic blue…bright turquoise candles make an edgy statement for table tops.

Stars are always a popular motif whether made out of wood, metal or paper!
