Sometimes, it is all about the details. And although they can be small, details often carry high impact! Think of tassels and poms as the decoration on the decoration. They add an extra flourish to accessory items like throw pillows, blankets and window treatments. Simple or ornate, tassels and poms help amplify color anywhere in your home.
Tassels have a long history dating back to the times of ancient Egypt and China when they were used on heavy clothing garments, blankets and rugs. In the beginning, tassels were simple knotted closures more like a button than decorative trim. The French elevated them to high art during the 16th century, when artisans would train for seven years before becoming a Master tassel maker. Up to 300 silken and metallic threads were used to create designs of varying shapes and sizes. It wasn’t long before tassels were associated with wealth, power and luxury and were being made in Italy and Spain as well.
Today tassels, poms and fringes are affordable accessories that can be found in many fabric and notion stores. I find unique and inexpensive ones at flea markets, and they are fun to use on anything that needs a splash of color.
You don’t have to be nobility to display or use decorative tassels anymore! Draw from patterns and texture to help coordinate color in a room.
Just a little touch of luxe: Tassels are a charming embellishment on a solid colored throw pillow.
Elaborate window treatments often have tasseled tie-backs, or pom pom trim for added movement and dimension.
